br The first of 1997’s volcano disaster movies (the second being IVolcano/I) was arguably the better of the two, but both of them made for passable entertainment with some spectacular special effects to serve as icing on the stale cake. After all, IDante’s Peak/I doesn’t pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalog of disaster movie cliches. Despite all that, it’s reasonably enjoyable. It’s an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He’s a volcano expert from the U.S. Geological Survey, and she’s the mayor of a cozy Washington State town perched beneath a volcano that’s about to blow. Telltale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody’s eager to leave, and even some of Brosnan’s colleagus think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests, and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton, and some (but not all) of her family, friends, and townsfolk. So what if it’s all pretty flaky… and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Don’t ask too many qustions, and you’ll find IDante’s Peak/I to be (if you’ll pardon the pun) a total blast. The Collector’s Edition DVD includes a documentary about volcanoes, IGetting Close to the Show/I, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive coverage of the creation of special effects, and audio commentary with director Roger Donaldson. IYi Yi/I is built from deceptively simple elements that together create a complex, warm, and utterly convincing portrait of family life. NJ Jian is a businessman facing bankruptcy, but he has to juggle his financial problems with family strife when his mother-in-law falls into a coma. NJ’s wife, Min-Min, brings her mother home, and each family member–including daughter Ting-Ting and her delightful little brother Yang-Yang–spends hours talking to the old lady. These conversations become confessionals and the characters gradually re-evaluate their relationships. There are no catastrophic conflicts, only the ordinary, sometimes troubled, unfolding of lives. Yang enhances the film’s sense of reality by frequntly holding the camera back from the action. The use of long shots and unexpected angles makes it seem like the audience is eavesdropping, catching glimpses of lives passing by. IYi Yi/I is almost three hours long, but it flies by. Yang is both a consummate, restrained technician and a subtle director of actors. The combination is a magical one. I–Simon Leake/Ip bOn the DVD/bbr The Criterion Collection’s newly restored high-definition digital transfer of Edward Yang’s iYi Yi/i is a revelation. The improvement over Fox Lorber’s previous DVD release (deeply flawed and rushed into distribution in 2001, and now utterly obsolete) is so dramatic that an entire article was devoted to the subject in the iNew York Times/i, explaining the meticulous processes that went into perfecting the new DVD master for Criterion’s definitive release. And while the feature-length commentary by writer-director Edward Yang and Asian-cinema critic Tony Rayns may be a bit too low-key for some listeners (because both Yang and Rayns are soft-spoken and not particularly dynamic speakers), attentive listeners will benefit greatly from their back-and-forth conversation. Yang provides in-depth insights into many aspects of Taiwanese cinema in general and iYi Yi/i in particular, from the hardships of distribution, competition from American films, his casting choices, explanations of specific shots, challenges and “happy accidents” during production, and various details regarding Taiwanese culture, its relation to Chinese and Japanese culture, and the familial traditions that are so affectionately explored in iYi Yi/i. Rayns is basically on hand to prompt Yang into making directorial observations, or to provide critical insights and observations for Yang to respond to. Both men are genial, intelligent, and articulate, so their commentary is well worth listening to for anyone interested in Asian cinema in a cultural context.p Rayns is featured individually in an informative video interview in which the noted Asian cinema expert explains the historical context which brought about the “New Taiwan Cinema” movement in the early 1980s. He goes into deeper detail about Edward Yang’s significance to the movement, along with other important Taiwanese directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang, and examines how Yang’s films (especially iYi Yi/i) are particularly distinctive, notably in their use of urban settings, reflections, and distant, immobile camera angles to emphasize character and behavior. iFilm Comment/i editor Kent Jones further elaborates on the qualities of iYi Yi/i in his enclosed booklet essay (particularly Yang’s exquisite use of Taipei locations and his subtle sensitivity to the rhythms of urban living in “a film about grace”). In “Notes from Edward Yang,” the director provides additional printed comments about the film’s title (which literally translates as “one-one” and means “individually” in Chinese), the challenges of casting, and specific details and milestones in iYi Yi/i’s production schedule. Based on Michael Crichton’s novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielberg’s iJaws/i. That lapse proves unfortunate, but there’s no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley. i–Tom Keogh/i P bThe Lost World - Jurassic Park/bbr In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg’s sequl to iJurassic Park/i is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn’t seem to care that the pieces of this project don’t add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in iJurassic Park/i) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). A complete bust.i–Tom Keogh/i p bJurassic Park III/bbr Surpassing expectations to qualify as an above-average sequl, iJurassic Park III/i is nothing more or less than a satisfying popcorn adventure. A little cheesier than the first two iJurassic/i blockbusters, it’s a big B movie with big B-list stars (including Laura Dern, briefly reprising her iJurassic Park/i role), and eight years of advancing computer-generated-image technology give it a sharp edge over its predecessors. While adopting the jungle spirit of iKing Kong/i, the movie refines Michael Crichton’s original premise, and its dinosaurs are even more realistic, their behavior more detailed, and their variety–including flying pteranodons and a new villain, the spinosaurus–more dazzling and threatening than ever. These advancements justify the sequl, and its contrived plot is just clever enough to span 90 minutes without wearing out its welcome. p Posing as wealthy tourists, an adventurous couple (William H. Macy, Tea Leoni) convince paleontologist Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and his protege (Allesandro Nivola) to act as tour guides on a flyover trip to Isla Sorna, the ill-fated “Site B” where all hell broke loose in iThe Lost World: Jurassic Park/i. In truth, they’re on a search-and-rescu mission to find their missing son (Trevor Morgan), and their plane crash is just the first of several enjoyably suspenseful sequnces.
